Sargent Manufacturing is a market leader in commercial door hardware. The company's customer base includes commercial construction, institutional and industrial markets. Included in our product offerings are windstorm certified locks, hardwired and wireless access control devices, designer levers and an antimicrobial hardware coating.

 

We are seeking an experienced Controller to join our Commercial Segment. The successful candidate will assist the General Manager by providing leadership and coordination of company cost accounting, planning, and budget functions. This pivotal role ensures that our accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) while driving financial excellence across the organization. The Financial Controller will be responsible for managing and optimizing our financial operations, fostering a collaborative environment, and supporting strategic decision-making to ensure continued growth and profitability.

 

This position will be onsite in New Haven, CT full-time reporting to the General Manager of SARGENT Manufacturing.

 

What you will be doing 

  • Oversee company planning and budget functions.
  • Direct the analysis of manufacturing costs and prepare monthly reports explaining reasons for variations from standard.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and product data management teams to adjust product costing attributes.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of standard cost rates and monthly standard gross margin analyses.
  • Prepare monthly profit/loss statements and explain any variances to budget/forecast.
  • Manage the annual standard cost roll to ensure that product costs are established properly and that costs are appropriately allocated to products.
  • Offer managerial accounting guidance focused on cost benchmarking and successful implementation of efficiency improvements.
  • Conduct financial analysis for product and investment decisions.
  • Gather financial information and prepare internal financial reports.
  • Interface with manufacturing to manage purchasing and inventory.
  • Interface with corporate financial teams.
  • Direct and modify the cost accounting system as necessary.
  • Manage the annual physical inventory process.
  • Conduct in-house material design analysis vs. buy analysis for any outsourcing opportunities.
  • Develop detailed product costing for any new product development.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries as necessary to complete month end close.
  • Perform monthly operational spending analysis and provide explanations for variances to trends and budget/forecast.
  • Prepare profit center P&Ls, analyze product mix, and conduct price/volume analysis.

 

What we are looking for

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related discipline.
  • 5-7+ years of experience in cost accounting or finance within a manufacturing environment; supervisory experience is required.
  • Knowledge of finance, financial accounting, budgeting, and cost accounting principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.  
  • Demonstrated experience in working with automated financial and accounting reporting systems.
  • Must be well versed with federal and state financial regulations.
  • Subject Matter Expert level in analyzing financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections.
  • Demonstrated experience with forecasting, rolling budgets, and product-line profitability analysis.
  • Hands-on experience working Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects.
  • Lead and facilitate team meetings.
  • Handle administrative tasks such as resolving accounting and receiving discrepancies, attending meetings, supporting Kaizen and 5-S activities, and reporting on inventory and missed orders.
  • Comfortable working within a matrixed environment which fosters collaboration.
  • High sense of urgency and responsiveness to business needs.
  • Strong teamwork orientation with active involvement from all team members.

Preferred

  • MBA and/or CPA preferred.
  • Experience in JD Edwards and or other ERP systems preferred. 
  • Experience with Hyperion Financial Management (HFM) preferred.
