Traka Locks in Double Win Success at the PEN Awards

Traka’s Medication Distribution Lockers created in partnership has won two national awards in the prominent Patient Experience Network (PEN) Best Practice Awards 2021.

Traka worked with Unilink, Serco and Practice Plus Group (formerly Care UK) to design and support installation of specialist Medication Distribution Lockers, which uses biometric access for prison workers to allow inmates to take more responsibility for their medical requirements in a safe environment.

So successful in their implementation, at the PEN National Awards 2021, they have won the ‘Partnership Working to Improve the Experience’ category, and the ‘Using Insight for Improvement to Improve Inequality of Care or Access to Services’ subcategory, both in recognition of modernising medication management in a prison setting.

The Medication Distribution Lockers were also Runner Up for their “Innovative Use of Technology, Social and Digital Media.’

Says Ruth Evans MBE, Managing Director of the Patient Experience Network:

"The Patient Experience Network National Awards are the first and only awards programme to recognise best practice in patient experience across all facets of health and social care in the UK.

The medication distribution lockers were a shining example of this objective. Judges were particularly impressed with the partnership approach shown and how the medication distribution lockers consider all aspects of resident care and staff performance. This is especially with due consideration to the often-tough operating conditions and focus on rehabilitation within the prison environment."

Says Tom Smith, Traka UK Major Accounts Sales Manager:

"The PEN awards have continually evolved with the changing landscape of patient care, introducing new categories and recognising truly innovative products and service solutions.

We are delighted to have won two categories at this year’s awards, itself dedicated to best practice sharing and holds a commitment to improving organisational performance.  It demonstrates the commitment of Traka, together with our partners to develop this system, utilising our individual strengths and innovations to create a unique solution for the benefit of prison staff and residents that really can make a difference."

The Patient Experience Network (PEN) is an independent, ‘not for profit’, service provider and membership-based network.  PEN is founded upon an understanding of the importance of a great experience for all – including patients, carers and staff.

Modular Lockers
Medication Distribution in Prisons

Medication Distribution Lockers (MDLs), allow healthcare professionals to load prisoner-specific medications into secure locker compartments. Prisoners can then access the locker to collect their medication at a convenient time. This reduces the risks associated with traditional distribution methods.
